 ANTOINE-MUSANGANYA DOHA PEACE CONFERENCES IN QATAR AND THE CONCLUSION OF SIGNIFICANT AGREEMENTS LEADING TO A PERMANENT CEASEFIRE August 1, 2025 The political and security situation in the DRC is worrying. The armed groups operating in the DRC are waging a civil war that is tearing the Congolese state apart, causing the country's collapse, and leading to the annihilation of the Congolese nation. The M23 rebel movement is the main armed group still active in eastern DRC. Its belligerent threats are causing the breakup of the entire region and the quagmire of the DRC, with the involvement of Rwanda, which provides material and financial support, and whose troops are present on Congolese soil. Paul Kagame is considered a godfather of the M23, and he also provides intangible support. Rwanda is the M23's rear base. The war in eastern DRC is causing an escalation between Congo and Rwanda. Under pressure from the United States, the European Union, the African Union, and the United Nations, the Congolese government and the M23 rebel movement have engaged in peace negotiations in Doha, Qatar, to find a solution to the war engulfing eastern DRC. The negotiators managed to defer addressing the country's fundamental problems, including governance, the democratic process, and the structural reforms proposed by the government, including a constitutional amendment. They raised security issues and focused on the political, security, and social crises. The Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 have reached significant agreements that have led to a permanent ceasefire. The parties agreed to hold the sixth round of negotiations from August 8 to August 17, 2025, and to finally conclude peace agreements that will lead to the end of the 30-year civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is believed that a national unity government is about to be formed, uniting the ruling majority, the republican opposition, and rebel movements, which will agree to end the fighting in exchange for a few wallets and guarantees of protection.
